Robben Island

Nelson Mandela's prison cell at Robben Island

The tour of Robben Island is an awe-inspiring experience. Former president and Nobel Laureate Nelson Mandela spent 18 years imprisoned on this island. Here he wrote his book A Long Walk to Freedom in utmost secrecy. The regime in the prison was brutal and conditions primitive.

Here you feel the burdened history of the country when a former political prisoner guides you over the prison-island. Do not wait too long before visiting Robben Island. The testimony of the actual prisoners makes the tour especially impressive.

The tour starts at the Mandela Gateway at Victoria and Alfred Waterfront with a multimedia exhibition. The ferry departs six times a day and the tour, including the boat trip takes about 3,5 hours. The ferry crossing itself is one of the highlights, with an awesome view of Cape Town. On the island the guided tour brings you to the maximum security prison, the lime quarry where Nelson Mandela and his fellow inmates did hard labour and  of course Mr. Mandela jail cell, which is exactly the way it was when he was imprisoned here.

The guide will offer you a unique inside into prison life and the island’s history.

Robben Island is a symbol of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.
